For those who might not have known, Starkeyville got its first in rememberance an ice jam flood. In the past, the dry sloughs have taken the water, and we simply rolled up our pant legs; not so this time. Last known time of flooding on this plain was the '68 flood. It was quite the surprise for all of us.

Ice jams downstream didn't allow these sloughs to empty into the Little Salcha, so everything simply backed up. From Sun AM through Thurs AM, we averaged 23" of water; appeared to crest Tues pm at 33-36". The current was around 5-7 mph; at 23" it was around 2-3 mph.

Steve G. was kind enough to let us borrow a canoe once we got a few supplies stashed on the other side for evacuation, to include pet goodies and gear.  We cruised the neighborhood and placed high water marks where we safely could manage, and actually had to run  some non-residents out of there about the time the water was cresting. He ate with us, and I got him ferryed out before dark.

To my knowledge, the Piledriver area was unaffected, but monitored.

I would like to make it known that thru this time, Rob and Val Weathers were on the beat with the rest of the Salcha Rescue crew, knowing their own place was being flooded. As a cooperative weather observer, I kept both the local command and my NOAA folks apprised of our situation; it brought them some comfort knowing that someone was at least on watch while they carried out their community duties. They are to be applauded; Rob is also very proud of the way the rest of the team handled itself through this period.

We currently have diesel and sewage contamination in the neighborhood; the large volume of water flushed a lot of it downstream. Viltrakis' and Weathers' have crawl space damage; we fear the Taylor's place is pretty serious, as he sustained 18" of water in his older log home. Stalhnecker is okay; haven't gotten over to visit yet, other than to learn he went to the roof, given the strength of the current, as he received the full brunt of the river where it breeched.  We, Nutter's, and Chuck's place are fine. Our high water mark was just below the bottom of our kitchen step, with another 16" of freeboard before ADIOS.  Water testing and septic pumping is pending along with assessment.

Guess it's time to have the hydrologist update the topography. The Tanana did a sneaky pete on us.

Subject: TROOPER SANDS INFO NEEDED
To: bystedtc@yahoo.com

ALOHA CHRIS!

I LIVE IN SALCHA, I AM A GRANDMOTHER AND HAVE A DISABILITY. LAST SAT {19 AUG 07}I HAD A RUN IN WITH TROOPER SANDS IN MY OWN YARD WHICH BLEW MY MIND!! AS I WAS RETURNING FROM A WEDDING UP IN THE CHENA RIDGE AREA I FOUND MYSELF SURROUNDED BY ABOUT A DOZEN YOUNG GUYS IN CAMOUFLAGED UNIFORMS WITH AUTOMATIC RIFLES COCKED AIMED AT ME AND SHOUTING AT ME...ACCUSATIONS ABOUT BEING A TERRORIST...

THERE WAS THIS OTHER GUY IN A RED T-SHIRT & JEANS ALSO INVOLVED WHO CLAIMS TO BE A TROOPER BUT NEVER IDENTIFIED HIMSELF UNTIL AFTER HE WAS IN MY YARD AND AFTER TROOPER SANDS ARRIVED AT LEAST 5 MINS AFTER I PARKED MY TRUCK & GOT OUT TO REMOVE MY GUITAR ETC TO GO INSIDE MY HOME ...

WHEN I TOLD THEM THEY WERE TRESPASSING ON PRIVATE PROPERTY & THAT I WAS GOING TO CALL AST IF THEY DID NOT CEASE & DESIST ONE OF THEM SHOUTED AT ME WITH AN ATTITUDE THAT THEY'D ALREADY CALLED AST!

WHEN A REAL TROOPER CAR FINALLY SHOWED UP IN MY YARD IT WAS TROOPER SANDS...THEY COERCED ME AND INTIMIDATED ME INTO BLOWING INTO THEIR SILLY LITTLE MACHINE & CLAIMED I WAS "OVER THE LEGAL LIMIT FOR ALCOHOL" AFTER BEING THROWN DOWN ON THE GROUND AND BADLY BRUISED, I WAS HAULED INTO FAI TO JAIL.FOR "DUI". THEN THEY HAULED MY TRUCK INTO TOWN TO THE IMPOUND YARD WHICH ADVERTISES IN THE GCI YELLOW PAGES THAT THEY TAKE CREDIT CARDS FOR PAYMENT, HOWEVER THE IMPOUND YARD REFUSED THE CREDIT CARD AND IT TOOK AN EXTRA TWO DAYS TO GET THE CASH UP TO GET MY TRUCK OUT WHICH COST AN ADDITIONAL FIFTY DOLLARS!!

I'M APPALLED AT THE WAY I WAS TREATED AND HOW MY CIVIL AND ADA RIGHTS HAVE BEEN VIOLATED...I HAVE TO GO TO COURT 1 OCT 07 AND HOPE YOUR SITUATION CAN SHED SOME LIGHT ON MY OWN...MAYBE EVEN GET THIS THING THROWN OUT OF COURT AS WELL AS SOME RESTITUTION FROM THE STATE CONSIDERING THE STEEP COSTS OF BAIL AND IMPOUND!!

I'VE NEVER HAD ANYTHING OF THIS KIND HAPPEN TO ME IN MY NEARLY 50 YEARS OF BEING ON THE FACE OF THIS PLANET & I AM WONDERING WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU AND IF MY ATTY CAN GLEAN ANY INFO FROM YOUR SITUATION SINCE IT IS APPARENT THERE ARE FALSEHOODS IN THE REPORT FILED BY SANDS ABOUT ME.

SANDS IS LOW MAN ON THE TOTEM POLE AS WELL AS THIS OTHER GUY, MONIGOLD SINCE THEY WERE RECRUITS IN 2005...MY BODY IS BRUISED AS A RESULT OF THEIR ROUGH TREATMENT OF ME. SINCE I DO NOT TRUST THE PUBLIC DEFENDERS TO HAVE MY BEST INTEREST AT HEART OR TO STAND UP FOR MY CIVIL RIGHTS OR MY RIGHTS AS A DISABLED PERSON I'VE HAD NO OTHER OPTION BUT TO HIRE MY OWN ATTY...AS YOU KNOW THIS IS COSTLY & ON MY DISABILITY INCOME I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO AFFORD FOOD/HOUSING/BILLS ETC FOR THE NEXT SEVERAL MONTHS!!

ON TOP OF THAT I WAS SUPPOSED TO LEAVE ALASKA FOR HAWAII FOR ENROLLMENT IN THE UNIVERSITY THERE BY NOW!! HOWEVER, NOW I'VE HAD TO DEFER MY ENROLLMENT INDEFINITELY SINCE I'M EMBROILED IN THIS LEGAL CRAP. NO ONE IDENTIFIED THEMSELVES AS LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS UNTIL AFTER THEY WERE IN MY YARD HERE IN SALCHA...

THEY TOWED MY TRUCK, THREW ME INTO A FILTHY 6X6 ROOM WITH 6-7 OTHER WOMEN WHERE WE WERE EXPECTED TO SLEEP ON THE FLOOR, SO NOW I'M SICK ON TOP OF EVERYTHING ELSE DUE TO THE NATURE OF MY DISABILITY COMPROMISING MY IMMUNE SYSTEM & BEING EXPOSED TO GOD ONLY KNOWS WHAT IN THAT ETERNALLY LONG 12 HOUR PERIOD IN THAT FILTHY LITTLE ROOM...WHAT REALLY FROSTS ME IS THAT I WAS RETURNING FROM A TROOPERS WEDDING WHERE I WAS INVITED TO DO THE MUSIC BUT WHEN I GOT THERE THEY'D HIRED SOMEONE ELSE WITHOUT TELLING ME!!! I FEEL SET UP SINCE THEY WERE THE ONES POURING DRINKS!!

YOU CAN EMAIL ME BACK OR CALL ME AT HOME AT THE NUMBER I LEFT ON YOUR ANS MACHINE YESTERDAY EVE. I BELIEVE ALASKA IS NOT UNDER MARTIAL LAW AT THIS TIME SO I FAIL TO UNDERSTAND WHY THE AIR FORCE POLICE WERE INVOLVED AT ALL SINCE I LIVE 12 MILES OUT OF THEIR JURISDICTION...I HAVE EVIDENCE OF SANDS LYING IN MY COPY OF HIS "INCIDENT REPORT" AND I FIGURED YOU MIGHT WANT A COPY FOR YOUR ATTY...LET ME KNOW HOW WE CAN GET TOGETHER SO I CAN GET A COPY TO YOU...I THINK OUR ATTY'S SHOULD TALK TO EACH OTHER!

IF THIS IS HOW THEY ARE GOING TO TREAT A DISABLED GRANMA WHO'S SACRIFICED THE "NORMAL" USE OF MY BODY FOR AMERICA AND THE WORLD BY WORKING FOR BOEING AND THE FAA AS A CIVILIAN ON INDEPENDENT CONTRACTS TO MAKE COMMERCIAL JETS QUIETER ON DEPARTURE AND TAKEOFF IT MAKES ME WONDER WHEN ALASKA CAME UNDER MARTIAL LAW!! THE WAY I WAS TREATED WAS EGREGIOUS!!

COURSE THE THREE MAIN THINGS I'M SUPPOSED TO AVOID BY DR'S ORDERS ARE:

STRESS, SLEEP DISTURBANCE, AND COLD I CAN TELL YOU I'VE NOT HAD A DECENT NIGHT'S SLEEP FOR NEARLY A WEEK AS OF TODAY NOT TO MENTION THE STRESS LEVEL HAS AFFECTED MY HEART CONDITION AS WELL AS EVERYTHING ELSE!!

LOOKING FORWARD TO HEARING FROM YOU SOON AND I'D LOVE TO TALK TO YOU IN PERSON SOMEHOW SO AS TO KEEP INFORMATION FROM GETTING INTO THE WRONG HANDS THE WAY ALL COMMUNICATIONS VIA EMAIL AND PHONE ARE MONITORED BY THE GOV'T. I HAVE INSIDE INFORMATION ON THAT AS I AM A CARETAKER FOR A MAJOR AT EIELSON AFB!

MAHOLO FOR YOUR INFO ON THE SALCHA WEB SITE!!

Howdy,

I know some of you are familiar with the presence of the new Cold Climate
Research Facility up at the U.
Moreah and I attended the Cold Climate construction seminar down in Delta
this past Saturday; the website is a product of the speaker's efforts over
the years.
I hope and encourage you to share this website; the need for sustainable,
affordable housing in the Fairbanks area is needed like it never has been
before. There's some GOOD STUFF here. We learned a lot.
The Alaska Building Manual for AFHC has been updated in 2006, so give it a
look as well.
Enjoy!

Message Subject: THE CLINTON BODY BAGS !!!

I wonder if all this is true?
A

 "Food for Thought"
Just a quick refresher course lest we forget what has happened to many "friends" of the Clintons.

1-James McDougal - Clinton's convicted Whitewater partner died of an apparent heart attack, while in solitary confinement. He was a key witness in Ken Starr's investigation.
2 -Mary Mahoney - A former White House intern was murdered July 1997 at a Starbucks Coffee Shop in Georgetown. The murder happened just after she was to go public with her story of sexual harassment in the White House.
3- Vince Foster - Former White House councilor, and colleague of Hillary Clinton at Little Rock's Rose Law firm. Died of a gunshot wound to the head, ruled a suicide.
4- Ron Brown - Secretary of Commerce and former DNC Chairman.  Reported to have died by impact in a plane crash. A pathologist close to the investigation reported that there was a hole in the top of Brown's skull resembling a gunshot wound. At the time of his death Brown was  being investigated, and spoke publicly of his willingness to cut a deal with prosecutors. The rest of the people on the plane also died. A few days later the air Traffic controller committed suicide.
5- C. Victor Raiser II- Raiser, a major player in the Clinton fund raising organization died in a private plane crash in July 1992.
6-Paul Tulley - Democratic National Committee Political Director found dead in a hotel room in Little Rock, September 1992. Described by Clinton as a "Dear friend and trusted advisor".
7-Ed Willey - Clinton fund raiser, found dead November 1993 deep in the woods in VA of a gunshot wound to the head. Ruled a suicide. Ed Willey died on the same day his wife Kathleen Willey claimed Bill Clinton groped her in the oval office in the White House. Ed Willey was involved in several Clinton fund raising events.
8-Jerry Parks -Head of Clinton's gubernatorial security team in  Little Rock. Gunned  down in his car at a deserted intersection outside Little Rock. Park's son said his father was building a dossier on Clinton. He allegedly threatened to reveal this information. After he died the files were mysteriously removed from his house.
9-James Bunch -  Died from a gunshot suicide. It was reported that he had a "Black Book" of people which contained names of influential people who visited  prostitutes in Texas and Arkansas.
10-James Wilson - Was found dead in May 1993 from an apparent hanging suicide. He was reported to have ties to Whitewater.
11-Kathy Ferguson-  Ex-wife of Arkansas Trooper Danny Ferguson, was  found dead in May 1994, in her living room with a gunshot to her head.  It was ruled a suicide even though there were several packed suitcases, as if she were going somewhere. Danny Ferguson was a co-defendant  along with Bill Clinton in the Paula Jones lawsuit. Kathy Ferguson was a possible corroborating witness for Paula Jones.
12-Bill Shelton - Arkansas State Trooper and fiancée of Kathy Ferguson. Critical of the suicide ruling of his fiancée, he was found dead in June, 1994 of a gunshot wound also ruled a suicide at the grave site of his fiancée.
13-Gandy Baugh - Attorney for Clinton's friend Dan Lassater, died by jumping out a window of a tall building January, 1994. His client was a convicted drug  distributor.
14-Florence Martin - Accountant & sub-contractor for the CIA, was related to the Barry Seal Mena , Arkansas  Airport drug smuggling case. He died of three gunshot wounds.

17-Danny Casolaro - Investigative reporter. Investigating Mena Airport  and Arkansas Development Finance Authority. He slit his wrists, apparently, in the middle of his investigation.
18- Paul Wilcher - Attorney investigating corruption at Mena Airport with Casolaro and the 1980 "October Surprise" was found dead on a toilet June 22, 1993 in his Washington DC apartment. Had delivered a report to Janet Reno 3 weeks before his death.
19-Jon Parnell Walker - Whitewater investigator for Resolution Trust Corp.  Jumped to his death from his Arlington, Virginia apartment balcony August15, 1993. He was investigating the Morgan Guaranty scandal.
20-Barbara Wise - Commerce Department staffer. Worked closely with Ron Brown and John Huang. Cause of death unknown. Died November 29, 1996.  Her bruised, nude body was found locked in her office at the Department of Commerce.
21-Charles Meissner -Assistant Secretary of Commerce who gave John Huang  special security clearance, died shortly thereafter in a small plane crash.
22-Dr. Stanley Heard - Chairman of the National Chiropractic Health Care Advisory Committee died with his attorney Steve Dickson in a small plane crash. Dr. Heard, in addition to serving on Clinton's advisory council personally treated Clinton's mother, stepfather and brother.
23-Barry Seal -Drug running  TWA  pilot out of Mena Arkansas, death was no accident.
24-Johnny Lawhorn Jr. -  Mechanic, found a check made out to Bill Clinton in the trunk of a car left at his repair shop. He was found dead after his car had hit a utility pole.

26- Hershell Friday - Attorney and Clinton fund raiser died March 1, 1994 when his plane exploded.
27-Kevin Ives & Don Henry - Known as "The boys on the track" case. Reports say the boys may have stumbled upon the Mena Arkansas airport drug operation. A controversial case, the initial report of death said, due to falling asleep on railroad tracks. Later reports claim the 2 boys had been slain before being placed on the tracks. Many linked to the case died before their testimony could come before a Grand Jury.

THE FOLLOWING PERSONS HAD INFORMATION ON THE  IVES/HENRY CASE:

Quite an impressive list! Pass this on. Let the public become aware of what happens to friends of the Clinton's!

HILLARY FOR PRESIDENT?  SURELY YOU JEST !!

Just a note to say I’ve had to deal with Trooper Sands in the past and he is not only unprofessional but a liar; he lied under oath in my felony case last year.  I’ve collected other instances of his misconduct, but unfortunately without more research they are just hearsay at this point.  His perjury, however, is clearly documented, although my lawyer advised against taking action against him.

Friends and Neighbors,

I am not writing this to stir up a bunch of hooey, but rather to help with
references. I do not have phone numbers for each and every person who has
worked there, so this is about as good as I can do to get this out to you
good folks.

Most are aware of the criminal event that took place down at the Lodge
September 1st.

This is a CIVIL concern on YOUR part, ASIDE from what has transpired.

I have just learned from a former employee that the employee records have
been removed from the premises, so there is indeed a potential for ID theft.

Additionally, if your payroll was above board and taxes reported, you might
not be able to file your 2006 taxes--IF-- you weren't being paid under the
table.

This incident may also affect your ability to apply for unemployment, public
assistance, etc, if you were working when this incident occurred.

Last, DO A CREDIT CHECK on yourself for a point of reference. The following
URL *must* be typed into your browser window, not a cut/paste/hyperlink.
This was designed for site security. You must have an email address. This
comes from all 3 credit agencies, and is FREE, once  a year.

https://www.annualcreditreport.com

If you do not have email, you can go to the library or the Fairgrounds;
www.mail.com is free.

Yep, the ripple effect is pretty strong on this one, sadly.

I strongly recommend that employees get together and contact the prosecuting
attorney's office with their concerns, so that a search warrant for such
paperwork can be justified.

I do not have a phone number for them; Customer service general info is
452-9277, so you might be pointed in the right direction.

Some have contacted the DA's office, with some consternation, but here's the
number anyway 451-5970. This might need to be where you need to file your
concern anyway.

If you still aren't happy with any feedback, the Attorney General has given
us contact information for the Alaska Ombudsman; there is a complaint form
available on their website:

http://www.state.ak.us/local/akpages/LEGISLATURE/ombud/home.htm
Phone 1-800-478-2624

Also keep in mind that as a community, we deserve whatever we are willing to
put up with, and I don't feel that we deserve what has transpired.

Good luck; let's keep our fingers crossed for Justice. Salcha River Lodge
needs to return to its rightful place in our community.

I received a telephone call last evening from an individual identifying himself as an AT&T Service technician (could also be Telus)  who was conducting a test on  the telephone lines. He stated that to complete the test I should touch  nine( 9 ), zero( 0 ),  the pound sign ( # ), and then hang up.   Luckily, I was suspicious and refused.    Upon contacting the telephone company, I was informed that by
Pushing 90#, you give the requesting individual full access to your  telephone line, which enables them to place long distance calls billed to your home phone number.

I was further informed that this scam has been originating from many  local jails/prisons
DO NOT press 90# for ANYONE !  The GTE Security Department requested that I share this information with EVERYONE I KNOW.

After checking with Verizon they said it was true, so do not dial 90# for anyone! PLEASE HIT THAT FORWARD BUTTON AND PASS THIS ON.

My response to this individual is “personal and community responsibility”.  It is well know that brush is not to be disposed of in the dumpsters.  That doesn’t mean that individuals are allowed to take it upon themselves and dump it wherever they please, especially if it’s someone else’s property.  Perhaps you are correct in suggesting that there should be an alternative way offered, to dispose of brush.  But until that happens, any descent person living in Salcha would respect the community and other citizens by not creating there own arrogant rules for what they think is an acceptable practice.  When they randomly dump brush wherever they feel like it, they are in essence “dumping” on the entire Salcha Community.  I would expect this practice from a child or perhaps a teenager, but not a tax paying adult.

Subject: Another No on Fire Service
      To: sfa@salcha.org

This is the dialogue I had with my insurance company:

Hi,

I am a current policy holder with your company.

Currently, the Salcha community near Eielson AFB does not have fire service
(zip 99714). Due to a rash of fires throughout this winter, the push is on once
again for us to organize a volunteer fire service, in addition to our already
in-place ambulance service as Salcha Rescue.

For the sake of argument, some folks believe that our insurance rates would
drop. I am not one of them. The other side of that is that our property values
would go up exponentially, given that service, and that our insurance premiums
would reflect this as well.

Most of us feel that with only a volunteer crew, as opposed to a crew in-
station, that the response times would be as marginalized as medical response
times, in that there might not be enough members responding to adequately and
effectively do nothing more than to prevent any further spreading of a fire.

I have also had a fellow Salchan point out that if his structure were only
partially burned, that the insurance company would only pay for damages
incurred, which would fall very short of what it would cost this day and age to
replace and bring up to code.  Some clarification here would be very helpful.

This is a rather impassioned discussion, and there will be a petition
circulating in our community to sign yes or no for some kind of fire service in
the Salcha area.

If you would be so kind as to provide us with some accurate consumer
information, this would be vastly appreciated. I am only QUITE aware that you
have several customers with home insurance in the Salcha area.

Thank you kindly in advance.

**Their reply to my query:

Margie,

My name is Cathy X. and I am the Personal Lines Manager for X. Insurance
Company.  I am not in any way an authority on the issues you have addressed nor
am I a consumer advisor.  You have some valid points to be considered in your
community's research into the feasibility of organizing a volunteer fire
service.  I can tell you that a recognized fire department whether volunteer or
not, can make a difference in a homeowner's insurance premium but there are
many factors that determine what the possible savings to the homeowner would or
could be.

For instance the distance to the Fire Station from the home or the Protection
Class assigned to the Fire Station can be a deciding factor in the premium
difference.  It would be advisable for you to contact another volunteer Fire
Department in your area to see what they had to do to organize a recognized
Fire Department and what rating they were given and how their homeowners were
affected by the additions of a Fire Department to their area.  Very possibly a
licensed insurance agent could give you the name of a Fire Department or you
could contact ISO (Insurance Services Office) in New York to see if they can
shed some light on your questions regarding a volunteer fire station.  ISO web
site is: www.isomitigation.com

As for the question of Insurance to value or replacement cost, here again I
would suggest you contact a licensed insurance agent in your general vicinity
and discuss the different types of coverage available to homeowners and how
replacement cost is determined to keep up with costs of construction as they
inflate each year.

It may also be a good idea to check the web site for the Division of Insurance
for Alaska to see if they can give you any more detailed advice.

It suffices to say, a good Fire Department can be the difference between a
partial fire loss and a total fire loss to a homeowner.

I hope I have been of some assistance.

So, I have gone to www.isomitigation.com, and found it's both interesting and
informative. I thought this to be particular to be aware of if you are thinking
about signing that petition:

TAKEN FROM THE ISOMITIGATION.COM website

The PPCTM Evaluation Process

To determine a community's Public Protection Classification (PPCTM), ISO
conducts a field survey. Expert ISO staff visit the community to observe and
evaluate features of the fire-protection systems. Using a manual called the
Fire Suppression Rating Schedule (FSRS), ISO objectively evaluates three major
areas:

a.. fire alarm and communications systems
A review of the fire alarm system accounts for 10% of the total
classification. The review focuses on the community's facilities and support
for handling and dispatching fire alarms.
  b.. the fire department
A review of the fire department accounts for 50% of the total classification.
ISO focuses on a fire department's first-alarm response and initial attack to
minimize potential loss. Here, ISO reviews such items as engine companies,
ladder or service companies, distribution of fire stations and fire companies,
equipment carried on apparatus, pumping capacity, reserve apparatus, department
personnel, and training.
  c.. the water supply
A review of the water-supply system accounts for 40% of the total
classification. ISO reviews the water supply a community uses to determine the
adequacy for fire-suppression purposes. We also consider hydrant size, type,
and installation, as well as the inspection frequency and condition of fire
hydrants.
After completing the field survey, ISO analyzes the data and calculates a PPC.
The grading then undergoes a quality review. The community will receive a
notification letter identifying the new PPC. ISO also provides a hydrant-flow
summary sheet, along with the classification details and improvement
statements. The classification details summarize each subcategory and indicate
the total points the community earned. The improvement statements indicate the
performance needed to receive full credit for the specific item in the
Schedule, as well as the quantity actually provided.   /quote.

**This is something I had a bit of a debate over several years ago when the
fire department issue had been discussed was the lack of infrastructure, and
what it would take to make all this feasible. Okay, so where are we going to
pump water from at -30F without having to travel back to one or two locations
to do so?

How much equipment/buildings/manpower, ad nausem do we need? This also goes
without considering training, requalification costs, and overall upkeep of
equipment,  facilities, and insurance.

Really, are we being asked to write a blank check for all of this? Again?

There is also a gross disparity as to who would benefit from fire protection
and who would not. For example, if you live on the back side of Harding Lake or
up on Salchaket Heights, or any point between Midway Lodge and the Richardson
Roadhouse (which is the end of Salcha Rescue's service area), or even up the
Salcha River, there is truly not a snowball's chance in hell of enjoying fire
protection while you pay through the nose for it. Yes, all of these areas
mentioned are within the Fairbanks North Star Borough as taxable properties,
mentioned as a courtesy to you new people out in the Salcha area.

As I had mentioned about my visit to the DNR office in another post for a burn
permit, the customer ahead of me was quite upset that his home insurance
company insisted that he was serviced by the Steese Fire Department, and not
the University Fire Department. From what I gathered, this made his homeowner's
insurance higher that it would be under the University fire service
jurisdiction.

The clerk was able to pull up his parcel account to see which service area the
Borough had designated his property to be assigned, and it was to the
University fire service area.

Given the reply from my insurance company, and the disparity the aforementioned
homeowner has with his insurance coverage rate between the University and
Steese Fire Service areas, I got the following information, with an Insurance
Class Rating of "1" being the highest/best:

Fairbanks Fire Dept, rating of  1    University Fire Dept, rating of 2  North
Pole Fire Dept, rating of 3

Steese Fire Dept rating of 8- that's right, 8. And per their admin assistant,
who was kind enough to return my call, they are trying to get themselves
plumbed up to a 6. That's still quite a far cry from the other three department
ratings.

SO, give the www.isomitigation.com website a look.

And for cryin' out loud you guys, get some flippin' insurance. It ain't going
to bankrupt you.

Subject:  Fire Service
I just found out that my insurance company, which is one of the major companies, said that it would make no difference in home owners insurance rates whether or not we got fire service.  We are considered to be in the same "zone" as Eielson and North Pole.  Even thought the fire trucks do not come out, I am not paying any more premiums than I would if they did.  If the proposed fire service was fully manned 24/7 (which we can't afford) fine, but being a voluntary department, my house would burn down anyway, by the time the volunteers got here.
Certainly no blame, but there if no one is out here within the first 10 minutes, normally you might as well forget it.  Therefore, I would be paying hundreds of dollars or more a year, with no compensation via my insurance company.  What's the point?  I do not think I will be signing the petition.

Eric R Thayer

And I forgot to mention that somebody stole the totem pole out side the Midway Lodge, Saturday night also. The same thieves?

Anybody spotted a trailer with a picnic table and a totem pole?

Okay, there has to be someone out there that knows something.  First, the beautiful Salcha sign that was stolen right after it was put up, the fuel tank from the fairgrounds, and now the picnic table.  We personally have had two thefts.  They stole the cache at the end of our driveway and last week I noticed all of my big tomato planters had been taken.  The stealing out here is getting ridiculous.  We can only hope they catch the ones responsible and they get what's coming to them.  I hope someday they have something taken from them that means something and they'll know how it feels.

It was a great day when we learned that Leroy Ellison  was making a beautiful picnic table as a donation to the seniors to be raffled off  in an effort to collect some money to pay the fuel bill for the senior building.

He delivered it to the seniors on Friday morning and we all were standing around admiring this beautiful golden log picnic table.

Well, guess what, some lowlife individual/s stole it Saturday night. Picnic table and the trailer it was loaded on

If you by chance know somebody who added a golden picnic table to their yard or if you seen it somewhere or maybe even noticed that somebody was driving around with it on the highway since Saturday night please call the troopers or the senior center 488-1606 or Phyllis Stern 488-1664.

I presume Mr. Thayer is not aware that the 33 mile pit is a popular summer
hangout, esp with the local kids and family.

It would be perfectly logical to me that someone would put brush there
instead of a dumpster. Why you might ask? The person has a bit of common
sense. Someone who doesn't have a lot of money that wants to spend an
afternoon cooking hotdogs and marshmallows and taking a nice cool dip has my
blessing. Enjoy the day!

1) It keeps the dumpsters from becoming glutted while the rest of us would
like to properly dispose of our garbage. We all pay taxes for this service,
and more than once have we fought with the Borough to keep our dumpsters.
The Two Rivers community has fought about this issue with the Borough as
well.

2) It keeps the general public from going out into the woods and damaging
property, especially if said property is privately owned. Go take a look at
the area around Bathing Beauty Pond and Piledriver Slough off Eielson Farm
Road in case you've forgotten what 'heavy use impact' looks like.

3) This person is also likely doing some fire prevention, as I have done
around my own place in the past; in fact, my home insurance dropped slightly
because of it.

The Harding Lake townies, Salcha upriver folks, northbound travelers, and
State Park users all are quite happy to load up our dumpsters for us in the
summer. To load them up with brush makes absolutely no sense to me.
Again, most of us would like to properly dispose of garbage that *is*
garbage.

If someone has a brush pile and is willing to let others bring over  a few
loads, by golly speak up. I'll help you tend your bonfire later on if you'd
like.

If this bothers you that much, then perhaps you should contact the FNSB to
see about dragging out some 'brush only' dumpsters for the summer.  They're
in the Blue Pages. One for the Stringer site, and one for the site at MP326.
Go for it.

The North Pole transfer site has them, but any of us with any sense aren't
going to drive that far to drop off a load of brush.  I'm just thankful that
indeed it was NOT trash. My plugged nickels.

Regards,

Da Schmuck Witha Truck

Dear Salcha Residents,

I thought it was a shame that someone dumped a few truck loads of brush/tree branches at the “beach area” at the southern end of the pond (the pond located across the street from the Knotty Shop).  I happened to be driving by when a large truck pulled out of that entrance and saw were it went.  Unfortunately, I did not see them actually discard the branches there.  As of today 31 May, the branches are still there.

Dear Morrie Mills,

Hi, my name is Kristi.  My husband and I are in the process of purchasing
property on Peregrine Road.  We will be moving from Texas to Alaska with our
son in 2008 (after I finish school); however, we will be spending our next two
summers in Alaska.  I have many questions about Salcha...we are buying the
property sight unseen.  I absolutely love your website; it has provided me a
way to get the know the city and its residents...thank you.

Would you be available and willing to talk to me sometime about Salcha?  I will
call you because of the long distance or you can call me at 214-883-0475.
Thank you for your time,

Kristi Skocpol-Saleh

Subject:  Burn Permits- Public Service Announcement
Hi Morrie,

I spoke with Rob W. the other day (he's one of my Starkeyville neighbors) about whether Salcha Rescue still issues burn permits or not, and the answer is no.

He suggests folks go to either the North Pole or North Star fire stations to obtain their permits.

HOWEVER, I stopped by the main DNR office to renew my permit, and have learned we can now obtain them online, via

If property owners do not know their section/township/range information to complete on the form, they can view their parcel account information via www.co.fairbanks.ak.us on the FNSB property database.

Renters should consult with their landlords, if wanting to burn debris before processing a permit.

They are good for 3 years, and are free.

Permits are required to be in place and in use, with people calling in between May 1 and Sept 30th..

Calling in is required for EACH DAY a person wishes to do a burn.

Safety tips and other important information is available on the website, or by calling the Fairbanks Division of Forestry at 451-2626.

please post the following response letter

This letter is in response to Mrs. Kimberly’s recent assault on members of the Salcha community. In this letter, Mrs. Kimberly invites anyone to dispute her claims if they can. Well, that is exactly what I intend to do, not only with the response, but also verbally to members of our small tight knit community.

  1. Maybe the lack of mention from the Newsminer for the woman that lost everything in the fire was due to the fact that she was out of town when it happened, and as she had only lived in the community for a few short months, not a lot was known about her.
  2. As Mrs. Kimberly mentioned, she has lived in the community for 18 years. At no point during this time has Salcha had fire service, which I am sure she was aware of. So why was she so surprised that she could have lost everything if the fire had spread? She should be happy to learn that there is a petition in the works to remedy this situation, so that in the future, neighbors will not have to experience the horror and helplessness that she felt that day.
  3. As far as the owner of the Knotty Shop bribing bystanders with free ice cream to help her haul out inventory. If I was in Crissy’s situation, alone and scared, with no one to help me, I only hope that I would have the foresight to seek help in any way possible.
  4. How is Mrs. Kimberly sure why Ralph and Crissy had their picture taken in front of the burned out home? Did she ask them? Maybe they wanted to be able to show their young son, later in life, what had happened to the home where he was born and raised. For that matter, what business is it of anyone why? One thing that she conveniently left out was that this was the home that Ralph and Crissy lived in and raised their family in for four years, having just moved out a mere three months prior to this tragedy.
  5. As for why Crissy did not mention that the woman who was renting the house had cats, maybe in the panic of the situation, she just was not thinking straight. If she had realized at that moment that the cats were trapped in the home, I have no doubt that she would have done everything in her power to rescue them. Knowing Crissy to be a very soft-hearted, caring person, this is something that will weigh on her mind for a long time in the future, even though nobody in their right mind could fault her for not thinking of every detail during this difficult incident.
  6. Knotty Shop, one of a kind. You bet it is. When I want a special locally hand-made gift, this is where I and many others head, because we know that we will have a choice of the finest available at a price that is fair. When I have company, this is where I take them to shop for souvenirs. I know that we will be treated with kind, courteous, friendly respect, not only by the employees, but also by the owners. This is the way it has been since the shop opened, by the former owners and the current.
  7. Mrs. Kimberly wants to know what the Knotty Shop has done for the community, because she couldn’t think of anything. Obviously she is not as much in the know as she seems to think she is. The Knotty Shop has given many of our young and not so young Salcha citizens a place to work where they did not have to commute for an hour to do so. This has enabled many people to gain valuable work experience in a friendly, relaxed environment. I personally can name several such people who have gone on to other experiences in life. People that value the time that they spent working here for both the old owners and the new. Thankfully there are many more good and decent former and current employees then there are bitter, disgruntled ones. Another way that the Knotty Shop has helped the community is with donations, many many donations. Here is list of some of the organizations that have been helped just in the last few years alone.

  1. 30 Millimeter Club, Eielson AFB
  2. 353 Moral Club
  3. 354th Maintenance, Eielson AFB
  4. 355 Fighter Squadron, Eielson AFB
  5. Alaska State Literacy Association
  6. Alaska Trapper’s Association
  7. Alpha Battery 4th-11th S.A. Family Readiness Group, Ft. WW
  8. Anteon Corp. DOD contractors support for the 172nd Stryker Brigade, FT. WW
  9. Arctic Lions Club
  10. Ben Eielson High School Grad Bash
  11. Ducks Unlimited
  12. Eielson Spouses Club
  13. Far North Christian
  14. Foxy Ladies Support Group for the 18th Fighter Squadron, Eielson AFB
  15. Habitat for Humanity
  16. Monroe Catholic HIPOW
  17. North Pole Sister City Group
  18. North Star Council on Aging
  19. Northrop Grumman, Ft. Greely
  20. Northstar Volunteer Fire Department
  21. Peace Officers Association
  22. Raven Basketball Team, Ben Eielson High School
  23. Raven Football Team, Ben Eielson High School
  24. Salcha Elementary School
  25. Salcha Senior Citizens
  26. Ticasuk Brown Elementary School

I feel deep sympathy for Liz, the woman that lost her possessions in the recent fire, along with her treasured feline companions, and truly hope that she is receiving the support she needs. The fact that someone is using her tragedy as a way to vent their anger and frustration of completely unrelated issues is appalling and in very bad taste. In the future, I would recommend that if a person knows not of what they speak, then perhaps they should refrain from speaking.

Thanks and Sorry

I would like to thank Morrie for respecting my impassioned email enough to print it and I would like to apologize to him for having to endure the wrath it brought down on his head.

Your website is a wonderful community service and I am truly sorry for any negative aspects I brought to it by expressing my own personal opinion of what I have experienced while living out here in Salcha. You do not deserve to be treated as you have been by those that don't appreciate my opinion or agree with it.

I do like the 'new' addition to your site and hopefully others can discuss and express themselves about this community and how they think they might better it.

I certainly agree with you that,' if you aren't part of the cure, you are part of the problem'.

I would also like to tell all the business owners in Salcha that do contribute to this community that my family appreciate your efforts and we will support you by bringing our business to you.

And before I end this I would also like to say thanks to all of you who supported me with emails, cards and nice phone calls. It really helps to know that I am not alone out there.

So, Morrie, again I am truly sorry for anything this very impassioned, frustrated, grieving, menopausal woman might have done to bring down the wrath from above on your head.

Thank you for letting me express myself, again, but with a whole different tone.

Always your neighbor,

Jan Kimberly
